EMD SD80MAC
The EMD SD80MAC was the first EMD locomotive to feature a flared rear radiator design. It was built in the mid-1990s and solely purchased by Conrail, which took delivery of 30 units, including the original demonstrator. Not only being rare because of its low production number, the SD80 is one of a few locomotives to feature a 20-cylinder engine. While also the second builder to feature the then-new AC-technology, which EMD introduced to the market in cooperation with Siemens. Conrail originally ordered a total of 108 SD80MACs, but turned most of its order into SD70MACs, after the railroad got purchased by Norfolk Southern and CSX. Similar Chicago Northwestern and Canadian Pacific intended to order the SD80MAC, but instead delivery AC4400CWs and SD90MACs. Today all SD80MACs are in service with Norfolk Southern.
