SteveM4’s BR ‘Fell’ Mechanical Diesel Mod
SteveM4’s BR ‘Fell’ Mechanical Diesel Mod
Reskinned and ported TF1 mod by SteveM4. Also new sound to reflect multi engine and gearing.
*He does not accept communications so could not ask for permission – so if he sees this and objects, I will pull this mod if he requires.*
Note: Due to the way the model is built, the numbers and logo are reversed on one side. It cannot be avoided.
This was a joint project of Davey Paxman & Co, Shell Refining & Marketing Co and Lt-Col L. F. R. Fell, and was able to deliver very high torque at low crankshaft speed.
Built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at Derby, it had six diesel engines, four of them used for traction, and two auxiliary engines. The locomotive was extensively tested and did prove the viability of an entirely mechanical drive for a locomotive of this power. However, everything on board was mechanically driven making this a complex and troublesome engine.
In July 1952, 10100’s gearbox was severely damaged after a loose bolt fell through the geartrain, and the locomotive was out of service for over a year. British Railways subsequently lost interest in the project, and an improved version of the locomotive under development was abandoned.
10100 remained in service until 16 October 1958, when its steam heating boiler caught fire at Manchester Central. It was returned to Derby Works, where it was sscrapped in July 1960.
