History and technical details of the MÁV M41 locomotive:
The M41 diesel-hydraulic, medium capacity locomotive was produced by Ganz-MÁVAG Locomotive, Wagon and Machine Factory (Ganz-MÁVAG Mozdony-, Vagyon-, és Gépgyár) with a B’-B’ axle arrangement. Due to its unique sound, it received the nickname “Rattler” (“Csörgő”) in Hungary. 107 of them were produced for Hungarian State Railways between 1973 and 1984.
Between 2004-2008, 33 of them were motorized with Caterpillar diesel engines. As a result of this, they became quieter and more powerful.
As an interesting side note, even Greece and Tunisia purchased a few of these locomotives.
