ARA 70 Ton Northeast Expansion by Cisco904
History
As the superiority of operating larger cars became evident during the early 1920’s, and as the major coal-hauling railroads expressed growing interest in them, the American Railway Association began working on a standard design for a 70-ton, 40-foot hopper. The final form of this design was adopted by the ARA in 1930 and incorporated cat hoppers and offset side sheathing for maximum carrying capacity.
