British Rail Class 47
British Rail Class 47
The Class 47 was built in the early 1960s for British Rail as part of the modernization plan that aimed to remove steam by 1968. 512 locomotives were eventually built, making them the most numerous class until the appearance of the Class 66. They were initially rated at 2750 hp, but they were later de-rated to 2580 hp due to engine reliability issues. They were seen on every type of service across the network. The class started to be withdrawn in 1986, ending in 2006. Currently, about 30 locomotives remain in service with various private companies. 33 were also converted into Class 57 and re-engined with EMD units.
