After a breakdown in services due to World War I, a second route for the Orient Express was added, via Milan, Venice and Trieste, the known as Simplon-Orient Express. This service, the most popular route during 20s and 30s. In the 30s the Lx CIWL coaches, which were the most luxury coaches used on the CIWL were introduced on the routes, acquiring the Orient Express its reputation as luxury train. On 30s three different services were running at the same time, the original Orient-Express, the Simplon-Orient Express, and the Arlberg Orient Express, via Zürich and Budapest.
On 1939, as most of the CIWL services, the Orient Express stopped running until 1946. In 1971, the Wagon-Lits company stopped running carriages itself. Instead, it sold or leased all its carriages to the various national railway companies, but continued to provide staff for the carriages. After that, the CIWL coaches were replaced by daily coaches. On 19th May 1977 the last Direct Orient Express ran between Paris and Istanbul, being the end of the original services. Otherwise, the name remained in use for some intercity services offered by the national companies.
