This area has significance in railway history, as it once had the junction where the East Coast Mainlines and West Coast Mainlines met.
In the 1880s, the two rival lines held what is called “The Race to the North” in which their express trains would leave London from their respective stations, Euston and King’s Cross, and the trains would race each other to Scotland, as publicity. The races initially terminated at Edinburgh, as for the East Coast trains to travel any further, they would require two train ferries to cross the Forth and Tay. This changed with the opening of the infamous Forth Bridge in 1890. After that, the Race to the North travelled all the way to Aberdeen. Or, rather, to Kinnaber Junction, just north of Montrose. This is because this is where the two lines met, so if one train gets there before the other, they cannot overtake.
The races were cancelled in the 1896 after a train crashed in Preston due to a driver not having experience with a train that does not stop at Preston.
With this map, you can re-create the East Coast Mainline between Dundee and Kinnaber Junction via Arbroath and Montrose, as well as the West Coast Mainline between Perth and Aberdeen via Forfar, as well as many branches such as:
– Perth to Dundee
– Dundee to Alyth
– Montrose to Inverbervie
– Aberdeen to Banochry
