Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe E8 Locomotives
The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, often shortened to simply “Santa Fe”, was the railroad with perhaps the most famous diesel locomotives. The “warbonnet” scheme, used on Santa Fe locomotives as early as the 1930s, became an iconic design that was also applied to these E8 locomotives, built in 1953. Interestingly, several of these units were rebuilt from previous, early locomotives, including E1s, and EMC AAs.
These locomotives were used on various passenger trains run by the Santa Fe, though they seem to have often been paired with shorter consists, where a single E8 could work more efficiently than multiple F7s or similar engines.
