TAF – Treno Alta Frequentazione
The first Italian double-decker electric train
History
The TAF was born in the late 90s and represents the first passenger train purchased by the new Trenitalia administration, as well as being the first vehicle released in XMPR.
The construction of the TAF is the result of a consortium participated by Firema, Ansaldo railway construction, AdTranz, ABB, etc.
At the time, the train had excellent acceleration for the times, and managed to have excellent capacity in the busy nodes, in fact, it saw and still sees a massive presence in the nodes of Naples, Rome, Turin, and Milan.
It was also acquired by Ferrovie Nord Milano, where the tractors were registered as EA761 and EB760 instead of ALe 426 and 506, while the trailers became EB 990 instead of Le 736. Type ATR 95 already at the beginning of 2000, while Trenitalia, after experimenting with it, abandoned the idea of using the ATR 95, all the TAFs of FNM merged into Trenord in 2011, together with some Trenitalia vehicles, the latter run as Trenord 2xx to differentiate from FNM trainsets.
Between 1999 and 2011 some TAF wore the Malpensa Express livery, before the introduction of all CSA.
