In 2002 the Raab-Ödenburger-Ebenfurter Eisenbahn (RoeEE / GySEV) and the Hungarian State Railways (MAV) purchased Siemens ES64U2 locomotives, identical in construction to the ÖBB 1116, for cross-border traffic between Austria and Hungary.
These universal locomotives handle express train traffic (except Railjet) and freight traffic between the two countries, but are also used in local passenger transport for ÖBB as part of the axle kilometer compensation.
