They are 2-4-2 locomotives, broke the precedent that had been imported of 2-4-0 locomotives.
They are called as ‘A8-Class’ by Japan Railway Bureau, and the cumulative fleet is sometimes referred to ‘A8 series’, collectively.
After the nationalization of private railwys, they were organized into three-digit numbers according to manufacturer or size.
