Japan Government Railway 2-8-2 Class D51, 2-8-4 Class D61 Steam Locomotive
Breif history of Steam Locomotives Class D51, D61
Most famous steam locomotive in Japan. The reasons are easy-to-use and mass-product.
The former class D50 was an excellent locomotive, but long and heavy.
Class D51 was designed to improve specs, including the above.
Soon after launch, it became wartime, so over 1,100 locomotives were built.
So they could be seen all over Japan, and got name recognition as ‘Pronoun of steam locomotives’.
Of course, they were in excess production, and some of them were converted into class C61 after the war.
And same as class D60, few of them were converted into class D61, for using low-class lines.
There is various shape of preserved D51 in all of Japan.
