LMS 4-6-2 ‘Princess Royal’ Mod
LMS 4-6-2 ‘Princess Royal’ Mod
In 1933, William Stanier was sent from the GWR to become the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS, with an aim of driving away the old regime of the ‘Small Engine Policy’.
He did that in fine style, by creating some absolute stonkers. These 4-6-2s were huge pacifics created to haul the long trains up the west coast route to Glasgow.
The main objective for the design of the engine was to maintain a high average speed and not require banking up the Lickey Incline.
The boy succeeded, and these engines later became the ‘Coronation’ class, or ‘Duchesses’.
