These versatile locomotives were originally designed to haul passenger trains in the PRR’s newly electrified lines in the East. After being supplanted in that role by the GG1 the P-5a’s were regarded and became the mainstay electric freight locomotive on the PRR from the 1940’s to the early 60’s when they were replaced by the E44.
