Shinkansen 500 Series Electric Locomotives
Shinkansen 500 Series Electric Locomotives
The Shinkansen 500 series electric locomotives are the Shinkansen vehicles used by the West Japan Railway (JR West). 144 of the 500 series were built by four companies, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hitachi, Kinki and Nippon Vehicle Manufacturing, with 9 trains of 16 units. The first train was put into service on March 22, 1997, and ran the “Hope” service on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. Blue Ribbon Award in 1998.
The Shinkansen 500 series electric locomotive is the highest speed train in the Shinkansen system, with a design speed of 350km/h. However, the top speed of the 500 series is limited to 270 km/h on the curved section of the Tokaido Shinkansen, which was built earlier, and the 500 series can run at a full speed of 300km/h on the Sanyo Shinkansen section (west of Himeji Station), which was built later and has higher route specifications. The 500 series can travel at 300km/h. However, due to issues such as comfort (small space and seat spacing inside the train) and environmental protection (excessive noise during travel due to the use of a full rolling stock), the 500 series was gradually replaced by the Shinkansen N700 series electric locomotives on the Tokaido Shinkansen under the Tokai Railway (JR Tokai), which began service on July 1, 2007, and was completely withdrawn from service on March 1, 2010. The remaining 500-series cars were scaled down. The remaining 500 series vehicles were downsized to 8 units, replacing the retired Shinkansen 0 series electric locomotives to run the Sanyo Shinkansen’s “Echo” schedule.
