NORTE/RENFE Ganz railcar (9155 Series)
NORTE/RENFE Ganz railcar (9155 Series)
RENFE 9155(Ex-Norte WMD 32) Ganz, Hungary, 1932
In the early 30s, Norte became interested in little diesel railcars for rural services. These little Ganz railcars were the first model ordered by Norte. They were made in Hungary and translated into pieces to Irún, where they were assembled and tested. They were named WMD and got painted on red and cream livery. Finally, they started servicing the Madrid-Escorial line in 1941.
After the creation of Renfe, these railcars, like all the DMU from former companies, were renamed as 9100 series. These Ex-Norte preserved their red/cream livery, and they received new electric tail lights. In the mid-40s, they were moved to the Valencia region.
In the mid-50s, the Ganz railcars were reformed, removing 2nd class, and replacing the original engine with a newer Pegaso one. Also, they received a new silver and green livery, that Renfe introduced to unify DMUs during the 50s.
