Timothy Hackworth’s Royal George 0-6-0
Timothy Hackworth’s Royal George 0-6-0
A locomotive without equal
The Royal George was developed by Hackworth in 1827 for the Stockton and Darlington railway. The Royal George was one of the – if not the – first 0-6-0 ever made (there’s an argument for Steam Elephant, but shhh)
This engine was very successful, and started a line of Hackworth engines known as ‘long engines’, these locomotives h often had return flue boilers, a tender at each end, and an 0-6-0.
The Rainhill Train’s competitor, Sans Pariel, was a version of the Royal George locomotive, being an 0-4-0 rather than 0-6-0, and a much-simplified drive system.
