FS UIC Z1 Coaches by FICA
FS UIC Z1 Coaches by FICA
Conceptually derived from the EUROFIMA, the UIC-Z1 carriages are substantially the Italian continuation of the European UIC-Z (eurofima).
They were purchased in various orders starting in 1987. In the first of them, only second-class coaches were acquired and the “Flag” livery (with blue bands) was applied.
In subsequent orders, first-class wagons and a limited number of baggage compartment cars were included. The liveries applied were the Bigrigio and the XMPR.
In 1993, the first carriages designed to transport wheelchairs appeared.
Starting from 2003, these cars, like the Eurofima, underwent radical changes with the IC901 project: all the coaches were transformed into open-space versions and the first classes were downgraded, to receive the same interior fittings as the second ones. The BH carriages for disabled transport were modified in order to obtain a small space for catering on board.
The UIC-Z1s are currently in service in the FS Group (IC sun and IC night services).
