History:
The MÁV M40-series diesel locomotive was made by Ganz-MÁVAG for Hungarian State Railways (MÁV). The locomotives were produced between 1963 and 1970. They were nicknamed “Hunchback” (“Púpos”) because of the way the driver’s cabin sticks out from the engine compartment. The M40 locomotive was a good construction in its day. It had several world-class parameters. Its modified variants were used abroad as well, in Cuba and the United States. Nowadays, 25 M40 locomotives are still in use.
