Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast Line never merged because their merger was denied on grounds of competition.
SCL, Family Lines, and Seaboard System never become a thing, so SBD and Chessie merging to create CSX is never a threat to NW and SOU because Seaboard System doesn’t exist, so Norfolk Southern never happens.
Sometime in the 80s, they rebranded with a new logo and paint scheme. The railroad industry was healthy again, and so they decided to adopt a more stylish identity.
I thought of this on the spot because I didn’t write any in-depth lore. I intended for you to be running it long hood forward like what they would’ve done, but there’s a regular one where it’s not backward.
