Norfolk & Western J Class
Norfolk & Western J Class
Folks it’s Pride month, and as such, I thought you would enjoy
The Biggest, the Blackest locomotive in the whole world: the Norfolk & Western J class! Sorry, this took a while, I’m trying to revamp these locomotives and not just convert them over.
The Norfolk & Western J Class was one of the last gasps of mainline streamlined conventional steam locomotives. Built-in the N&W’s own shops in 1941, they proved extremely powerful and capable of hauling the N&W’s fastest passenger trains (the Pocahontas and the Powhattan Arrow) over its short but mountainous mainline from Norfolk to Cincinnati. Unlike most streamlined steam locomotives, no professional industrial designer designed the shrouding – it was all done by regular guys in the shops in Roanoke.
Dieselization came late to the coal-rich N&W, with the J class only being retired in 1958. Towards the end of their lives, they found themselves in all kinds of miscellaneous service, proving powerful enough to haul long slow unit coal trains and manifests.
The locomotive has been altered since TPF1 – featuring updated textures, better couplers, poppable assets, and working coupler doors. A colorable version has also been included for all you freaks who like colorable trains.
Stats for nerds:
