–CN:
The Shinkansen 0 series is the first generation of Japanese Shinkansen. It was put into service when the Tokaido Shinkansen opened to traffic in 1964. In addition to being the ancestor of the Shinkansen train in Japan, the 0 Series is the world's first high-speed rail vehicle.
Top speed: 220 kph
-12 Cars H Set:
The initial shinkansen fleet delivered for use on Hikari and Kodama services on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen from 1 October 1964 consisted of 30 12-car sets. Had bigger windows.
–In the initial period, the 0 series were 12 trains with larger windows.
-16 Cars NH Set:
Between 1977 and 1980, 35 new 16-car NH sets were formed of −1000 subseries cars (batches 22 to 29) for Hikari services on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen and San'yō Shinkansen lines.
-The reformed H and NH marshallings are all trains for the "Guang" service, both of which are 16 marshallings. With smaller windows, this design feature was also inherited by subsequent Shinkansen lines.
-4 Cars Q Set:
4-car Q sets were formed from March 1997 for use on Kodama shuttle services running between Hakata and Kokura / Hiroshima, and also for use on some Hakata-Minami Line duties. These sets had no Green car.

–R and WR marshalling are 6 marshalling trains for the "Echo", owned by JR West Japan. The "Western Japan Light" was used, with blue bands under the windows and "W" logo on the body.
-6 Cars WR Set:
The 6-car R units with no Green car were first formed in June 1985. The refurbished units were recognisable externally by its black and fresh green line.
–R and WR marshalling are 6 marshalling trains for the "Echo", owned by JR West Japan. In May 2002, in order to update the image of the train, JR West Japan decided to replace the WR group and the 100 series V group with a gray main color and a fluorescent green horizontal line under the window.
-12 Cars SK Set:
These 12-car SK sets based at Hakata Depot were operated by JR-West on Sanyo Shinkansen West Hikari services between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. The sets were recognizable externally by the addition of an extra thin blue line below the windows and by the large "West" decals near the doors.
-The SK formation is a train for the "Echo" service, which is made by reducing the K formation from 16 to 12. Painted in "West Japan Light" with blue trim under the window and "W" logo on the body.
