The 40100 series were a unique set of 10 experimental engines built by Alsthom between 1964 and 1970. Each number was unique, and has seen a lot of modifications all along his lifetime. Very fragile mechanics, reliability was the major concern of this series, masking his very good performances. They were meant to be used under 4 different currents, all over occidental europe, before high-speed TGV do so, and replace them. First versions can speed up to 160/240km/h (depending on reductor ratio) while later they were reduced to 180/220km/h. They were the first serie to introduce de “broken nose” design by Paul Arzens.
