The Tower of Pisa or Leaning Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Pisa Cathedral, located in the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, a municipality in the Italian region of Tuscany. The tower began to lean as soon as construction began in 1173. Its original height was 60m although it currently measures 56.67m from the base on the highest side and 55.86m from the base on its lowest side. Its weight is estimated at 14,700 tons and its inclination is about 4°, extending 3.9 m from the vertical. It is considered, along with the cathedral of which it is a part, one of the jewels of Romanesque art. In 1987, the heritage site of the Piazza del Duomo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
