New York Central Commodore Vanderbilt Hudson

Welcome back to the beginning of the end of the NYC 4-6-4 Hudson series. As I mentioned back when I released the streamlined Hudsons I would be working on the streamlined versions!

The Commodore Vanderbilt!
The first of the streamlined engines during the 1930’s and the art deco era. Named after the NYC’s most famous leader, Cornelius Vanderbilt. Out shopped in 1934 designed by Carl F. Kantola she served the New York to Chicago market. In 1935 she was pulled back and given a change to her drive wheels and fitted with the Timkin roller bearings.

She hauled famous trains like the 20th Century Limited for most of her career. In the end, she would also be the only NYC locomotive to be streamlined twice. In 1938; the bathtub of a streamline casing was removed, and she was refitted with the Henry Dreyfuss streamlining. One of the most iconic streamlining, the spartan helmet hudsons, and renumbered to 5344.

Ultimately #5344 would be scrapped in 1957 as the diesels were already on the stage and taking over the rail-roads. The Commodore is a J1E Hudson that has been streamlined & upgraded.
